In 2005, the discipline of Soil Science in Hohai University was approved to confer master's degree by the Ministry of Education. The discipline mainly studies the basic theories and technical methods of rational exploitation and effective utilization and protection of agricultural water and soil resources, and provides the theoretical and technical support for the sustainable development of agricultural production. The discipline relies on the faculty of Agricultural Water and Soil Engineering, Agro-biological Environment and Energy Source Engineering as well as other disciplines in the College of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering. The discipline has cooperation with the Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Soil and Fertilizer Station of the Department of Agriculture and Forestry in Jiangsu Province, the Institute of Vegetables and Flowers Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and the Institute of Resources and Environment of the Academy of Agriculture of Jiangsu Province. Its studies mainly center on agricultural water and soil conservation, hydro-melioration, land consolidation, ecological restorations of polluted soils and soils obstacle and its fertilization in protected agriculture, etc.

There is a laboratory of soil and agricultural environment, an experimental center of agricultural water and soil engineering as well as a base of open-field high-tech facility agricultural science and engineering. There is a batch of internationally advanced equipment. Besides, the discipline has gained good conditions and development opportunities provided by the key laboratory of the Ministry of Education for high efficiency irrigation and drainage and agriculture, soil and water environment in south area. The discipline not only enrollment to agricultural resources utilization and other undergraduate majors, but also enrollment from agriculture, agricultural engineering, biology related disciplines.
